The 80th Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf club is upon us and there is no better venue to witness a golf tournament, even if it is from your living room. The Azaleas and Dogwoods should be in full bloom which for us in the Northeast is a welcome sight. Who is your choice to win the tourney? The winner of the tourney must avoid hitting the big miss and play bogey free golf.
Will it be last years winner Jordan Spieth? Spieth is struggling right now, so this may be to his advantage. Spieth is currently ranked 13th with almost 2 million dollars in winnings. Last years winner was tied for 7th in the WGC-HSBC Championship on Nov 7th, and 4th at the World Challenge. His lone win this year was in the Hyundai Tourney netting him the bulk of his earnings this season.
The old guys will be rooting for Phil Mickleson to return to form and win his fourth green jacket. The course sets up perfectly for Phil who hits the ball high which allows the ball to spin it onto the green. Mickleson is one of the best at bunker play and making the most illogical shots.
Can Bubba Watson wear the green jacket for the third time? Watson who recently admitted that he has “a lot of mental issues that I am so fearful of things” will need to focus on the task at hand and not let his emotions overtake him in order to win.
Jason Day has been playing excellent golf winning his last two tournaments so he has the momentum, which actually may be a disadvantage to him. Day has had physical problems too with a balky back and most recently he reportedly has lost 11 pounds due to flu like symptoms. Jason may be able to harness his emotions enough to put his 2013 Masters choke behind him. Day had the outright lead before he bogeyed the 16th and then bogeyed the 17th, eventually finishing third in the tourney.
Who is your choice? I will take Watson.
